TRAVEL: Sardinia, Italy
a small bite sized guide for things to do and see in beautiful Sardinia, with the kids or without.
My guide to one of the most spectacular places in the world. If you like white sandy beaches and turquoise crystalline seas, this is your place. My top tips are to hire a car (public transport is non existent) and to see as much of the island as you can.
AIRPORTS: Olbia, Alghero and Cagliari
Olbia (NE) port and airport town so wouldnt recommend staying in the centre as very busy.
nice areas to stay north of the airport: San Pantaleo, Baia Sardinia, Canniggione.
nice places to stay south of the airport: San Teodoro, Porto San Paolo, Puntaldia, Porto Ottiolu.
Day Trips:
Palau get ferry or boat trip to Maddalena and Caprera islands (stunning!) recommend you do the beach hopping trip so you see as many as you can.
Grotta di Ispinigoli. Mainland Sardinia but not far from Grotte bue Marino National park and Cala Luna. If you come here make sure you book into hotel Su Gologone for a traditional and delicious Sardinian lunch/dinner. (Suckling piglet etc).
Boat trip to Tavolara island from Porto San Paolo. Tavolara is a tiny island off the coast of Sardinia with emerald green seas.
MUST Places to eat:
Gallo Blu, San Teodoro
Punta Est, Coda Cavallo
L’Agnata agriturismo, Tempio
Su Gologone, Oliena
Beaches: Costa smeralda (beaches which are a must: La Celvia, Capriccioli, Liscia Ruja, Romazzino) don’t stay here. Hugely over priced and very touristy but beaches are gorgeous!
Other really nice beaches and areas around here:
Puntaldia; a lovely harbour but also perfect beach for families as very shallow water
Cala d’Ambra; one of the quieter beaches mostly used by the locals.
La Cinta; 5km of pure white sandy beach with turquoise sea. Watersports available.
Coda Cavallo (if you go here make sure you drive to the top of the mountain road and see the view!!)
Porto Ottiolu. Very near San Teodoro. Lovely little harbour perfect for a drink or ice cream.
Alghero (NW) Spanish influenced town by the coast with lots of places to eat and drink.
Take a drive down to Bosa; a typical traditional Sardinian village with murals and lots of open house homes/shops to show you the Sardinian traditions. Plenty of food and also traditional costumes and dances.
Stintino is at the top of the island but nearest reach from Alghero airport. This small town has some of the most beautiful beaches of the island including ‘La Pelosa’ beach with shallow transparent waters (perfect for the kids) and the smaller “Pelosetta’.
Cagliari (S) the island’s capital
Visit the most famous winery of the Island; Argiolas. Delicious wines and fantastic tour via the vineyard and all the process of making the wines. Suitable for kids too.
Visit the old town city centre and enjoy a meal at Antica Cagliari
Il Poeta beach is a must. Massive stretch of sandy and blue water sea.
